One of the neat things about Mac OS X was the ability to send an SMS directly from your Apple Address book, this was a GREAT feature, and here is another reason I HATE Apple .. Apple for some reason have decided that this was not necessary to its customers and without warning have removed this. So you upgrade to Leopard, get a whole bunch of neat new features but something that I used on a weekly basis is now gone.
You would think, this is not big deal right, can't be complicated to send a few commands to a GSM to send an SMS ! A little widget would do it fine, nothing complicated WELL NO ... I have a Sony Ericsson K750i and here is what I have tried so far.
- emitSMS v 1.99 Widget - FREE - Does NOT Work and CRASHED Mac OS X 10.5.5 - NOT recommended http://algoritmer.dk/widget/
- Bluetoot Texter v 1.4 Widget - FREE - Does NOT Work, connects to the GSM but nothing happens - NOT recommended http://www.happymakinggames.com/downloads/BluetoothTexter/
- FoneLink 2.15 Application - €33.57 +VAT - Works - This is an overkill, it does much more than send SMS and I don't want all the extra features no recomendation as I don't need other features - Demo version adds obnoxious message to SMS - http://www.novamedia.de/e_pages/e_produkte_mac_fl.html
- message2net 1.2.4 - Appllication - €16.72 - Works but is expensive to send an SMS - NOT recommended due to price - demo version is limited in the number of SMS you can send and adds an obnoxious message to SMS- http://www.novamedia.de/download/e_demo_m2n_mac.html
- BluePhoneElite 2 - Application - €24.95 - Works - I really did not like the set up and somehow all my calls were being diverted and then it CRASHED Mac OS X completely - NOT recommended - Demo version limits the size of SMS http://mirasoftware.com/BPE2/
- nova media Phone Plugins - Service - €9.95 - This is what i want, potentially works from any application using services and also from address book - Impossible to select phone, when trying to select I see the GSM is READ by you can't select and Choose stays greyed out - Demo version annoys you each time you have a number in buffer - NOT recommended http://www.novamedia.de/e_pages/e_produkte_mac_phone_plugins.html NOTE: it is beyond me how a programmer could write crap like this, why not display an error message or SOMETHING.. you just can't select the phone, read more to see messages from system log file!
- SwissSMS - Application - Free - This does not do what is expected and it certainly does not send SMS via a GSM - NOT Recommended - http://code.google.com/p/swisssms/
Decision: After trying the above and a couple of others not worth the mention I have decided to send my SMS in the future from my SMS provider's web site: http://smsonline.proximus.be/smsonline/sms/
Note that some products CRASHED Mac OS X. A Widget or an application attempting to send an SMS CRASHES the operating system, Mac OS X is starting to look more and more like Windows doesn't it. When I say CRASH I mean that you can no longer do anything, both times the machine locked up and the only way to recover was to switch it off. You could ping the IP address but you could not ssh into the machine ....
